Challenge
Major breweries across the country generate very large quantities of spent brewer’s yeast containing beer, yeast and alcohol. The companies were receiving minimal revenues, off-take was not reliable and product was going into livestock applications with growing regulatory concerns regarding the removal of alcohol.
Solution
Our company has leveraged its relationships with the major pet food companies in the US to introduce a branded dried brewer’s yeast product for use in cat and dog food diets. We conducted feeding trials to demonstrate the value of the product. We also made a capital investment to mitigate the alcohol removal and developed a regional market for the sale of alcohol for fuel.
Results
We were able to direct all of the spent material away from low value livestock diets and into industrial pet food markets, which led to higher values for yeast and a more stable ongoing solution for the yeast.
